Miami Performing Arts Schools & Programs

There are many places to study in Miami. Florida International University offers undergraduate instruction in music, dance and theatre; Miami University has undergraduate music, theatre and musical theatre degrees, and Barry University offers undergraduate courses in music and theatre. Those performing artists wishing to study past the undergraduate level may like to audition for the Lyric Opera or New World Symphony apprentice programs.

The Labor Market Index projects an astounding 38 new jobs per year in the performing arts sector through to 2012. The Florida Labor Board lumps performing artists in with spectator sports so a few grains of salt are necessary when reading the statistics. It is far more likely that there will be new positions opening up in the Cuban music scene rather than the ballet. Even more likely is that spectator sport positions will become available before ones in the performing arts. The overall anticipated growth is 0.64%, which is roughly half of the average for all Miami-Dade jobs.

Why Miami is a Great Place to Study Performing Arts

The high culture scene in Florida is active but quite young. The Miami Symphony Orchestra has been in existence for 12 years and the Miami City Ballet celebrated its 20th season in 2005. The Florida Grand Opera is the grand dame of the trio, celebrating its 65th season in 2005. There are many smaller theatre companies such as the Laughing Gas Improv which provide alternate sources of entertainment.
